Tématem románu Hlad (1890) norského autora, nositele Nobelovy ceny za literaturu Knuta Hamsuna je hlad ve dvojím smyslu. Protagonista a zároveň vypravěč románu, začínající spisovatel, se snaží prosadit bez valného úspěchu v norském hlavním městě Kristianii (dnešní Oslo) a trpí chudobou a nedostatkem jídla. Dlouhá období fyzického hladu se podepisují nejen na jeho tělesném zdraví, ale vyvolávají v něm i nezvládnutelné proměny psychického stavu, nepředložené činy a chaotické projevy mysli až halucinační deliria. V protikladu k poe­tice realistického románu žije hrdina Hladu bez účasti na společenském dění a ani nepomyslí na jakýkoliv sociální protest. Věnuje se pouze vlastní situaci v obdobích hladu a z ní plynoucí neschopnosti komunikace s jinými lidmi. Tady nastupuje druhý — a důležitější aspekt titulního hladu.
